2017 Potluck in the Park: A Diversity and Inclusion Gathering for Friends Families | June 3, 2017
Potluck in the Park: A Diversity and Inclusion Gathering for Friends Families is a new annual event co-sponsored by the PA Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Potluck in the Park brings together Friends families from every division to celebrate the diverse identities and stories in our midst and to foster lasting relationships across lines of difference. This year's event was held in Prospect Park in Brooklyn on Saturday, June 3. The afternoon event brought together both current and incoming families. Participants were asked to bring a dish that symbolizes their family and to wear clothing or accessories that represent some aspect of who they are. After sharing with each other the significance of the clothing or accessory they chose, participants engaged in an interactive cultural experience involving singing, drumming, dancing, and storytelling. Storyteller and performer Gya Watson, who hails from the San Carlos Apache Nation, led the group, sharing with participants some of her people's sacred stories. Vocalist Sabrina Clery, mother of Kaia ’29, closed the gathering with a soulful rendition of A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. Participants were encouraged to spread love and the message of equality for all wherever they go.
